“Lily hasn’t always had it easy, but that’s never stopped her from working hard for the life she wants. She’s come a long way from the small town in Maine where she grew up—she graduated from college, moved to Boston, and started her own business. So when she feels a spark with a gorgeous neurosurgeon named Ryle Kincaid, everything in Lily’s life suddenly seems almost too good to be true.
Ryle is assertive, stubborn, maybe even a little arrogant. He’s also sensitive, brilliant, and has a total soft spot for Lily. And the way he looks in scrubs certainly doesn’t hurt. Lily can’t get him out of her head. But Ryle’s complete aversion to relationships is disturbing. Even as Lily finds herself becoming the exception to his “no dating” rule, she can’t help but wonder what made him that way in the first place.
As questions about her new relationship overwhelm her, so do thoughts of Atlas Corrigan—her first love and a link to the past she left behind. He was her kindred spirit, her protector. When Atlas suddenly reappears, everything Lily has built with Ryle is threatened.”
Let me begin with how amazing Colleen Hoover’s is at crafting a story that captivates the reader. She knows exactly what to write to make a great story that is so realistic, relatable and will provide an emotional journey. This book is just like the many others she has published. I am a speed reader and I could have had this book finished in hours but I forced myself to read this book over a two day period. I really wanted to take the time to digest all of the words/events and to reflect. I think it only made me love this book even more. There are moments that I was laughing out loud, squirming in my seat, fuming with anger and grinning ear to ear. Yes, some of it was hard to read…and it only made the story even more thrilling, I had to know what was going to happen next!
The characters in this story are so complex and “normal”. When I say normal, I mean that I could easily find people in my neighborhood/community that are like these individuals. Another amazing thing Colleen excels at is explaining/showing characters emotions, thoughts and actions through various ways of writing. She does this through dialogue between characters and inner dialogue/thoughts of one character. Without this, this story wouldn’t have been a success in my eyes. Having Lily’s thoughts pushed me to understand where she is coming from, although I couldn’t directly relate, I was able to walk in her shoes…and that is why this book is amazing!
I encourage anyone to read this and to take your time to really digest all of the words and events.
