This is a series about two brothers, half “demon” Caliban “Cal” and human Niko. They encounter dark, unearthly creatures while learning about Cal’s growing “powers” and helping others along the way. Think – Winchester Brothers – but darker!

What I love about this book and series is the character development and the relationship between Cal and Niko. It’s heartwarming to see how Niko cares for Cal and funny to see the sarcastic, little brother-esque Cal can be, normally on purpose too. It makes for a thrilling story and a “nail-biter” when something goes wrong for Cal or Niko. I just love that they have each other! I really also love the paranormal/dark creatures and how the brothers have to survive them. 

And the twists! Without giving too much away, it’s so thrilling to see the obstacles thrown at Cal and how he responds. When a “darkling” takes over Cal’s body, nothing is off limits. Death and destruction is on the agenda and Niko must find away to save Cal…if he can. 

My favorite twist is towards the end when Niko must do the one thing he doesn’t want to do… stop darkling Cal.

Overall this is a great read! Complex characters, detailed dark world with monsters, brothers who have each others’ backs, and more. Oh, let’s not forget the drama, hilarious secondary character – Goodfellow. He’s a gem. 

The audiobook is great too! The voice actor fits Cal perfectly in Nightlife and even makes the demon/darling voices…goosebumps! Just know that audiobook for book two is a different voice actor. Still good but took some time to adjust.
